Paper sculptor - Sculpteure de papier

Marie-José Gustave, an artist of French Caribbean heritage (Guadeloupe), was born in Paris and has been living in Quebec since 1998.

It is in France that Marie-José graduated with a master’s degree in apparel production; since then, fibres and especially paper fibres have always fascinated her.

A self-taught artist, her work is based on experimenting with materials and combining different craft techniques, amongst which are basket making, knitting and crocheting.

Paper thread, in appearance flexible, is actually recalcitrant, and in this tense interaction between the material and herself, she constructs three-dimensional shapes and discovers the textures that can be created with paper yarn. Then, freed from those technical constraints, she explores more sculptural shapes and organic textures.

Her art practice is quintessentially about the confluence of cultures. From West Indian descent, she lives at the junction of three continents and that transpires in her artwork, which is at the crossroads of ethnicity and modernity.

Marie-José is a professional member of the Quebec and Ontario Craft Councils as well as of the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists – IAPMA.

Her work has been exhibited in Montreal, Toronto, Cambridge, New York, Slovakia and Germany.
